| A wide range of eco-fabrics | |

Foxa has developed a range of eco-friendlier workwear fabrics. Development was carried out in collaboration with customers and based around the customers’ needs and wishes.
- “When developing eco-friendlier fabrics, we noticed that environmental friendliness isn’t as simple as it seems at first glance. There are many different eco-friendliness criteria, some of which are even mutually exclusive. Customers also have slightly different approaches to eco-friendliness, and we at Foxa have developed a range of solutions to meet these needs,” explains product manager Heli Sukki, who is responsible for developing the eco-range.
Foxa has considered the environmental friendliness of the eco-range from several different perspectives, and has developed fabrics for a wide variety of applications. There are ready products for heavy and light workwear, and new products can be developed flexibly based on customers’ wishes.

Elasticity from corn fibreCustomers have long hoped for elastic fibres to add comfort to workwear. The Sorona fibre developed by DuPont replaces elastane, which provides elasticity, with a bio-based fibre made from corn.
- “The Sorona fibre can be used in a number of fabrics to add elasticity and to replace oil-based fabrics such as elastane and polyester. For example, the strong twill Dakota is excellent for heavier workwear that requires some stretch. Montana meanwhile is a pleasantly soft but sturdy knit that is suitable for patient clothing at hospitals.”

Organic and recycledAnother eco-friendly option is to combine recycled polyester or polyamide with organic cotton. Fox has a range of options that fall into this category – twills, ripstops and canvasses – in a number of weights and for various purposes. The sustainable and easy-care fabrics are suitable for use in outdoor and hiking clothing and for lighter indoor workwear, such as clothing used in the service industries.

REC-versionsFoxa has also developed eco-friendlier REC versions of its familiar fabrics, in which virgin fibre is replaced with recycled fibre.
- “Eco-friendlier versions of our softshell fabrics Foxshell M and Foxshell NOM, which are used in outdoor and indoor work jackets and vests, are now also available. In these, the virgin polyester has been replaced mainly with recycled polyester made from recycled plastic bottles,” explains Heli Sukki.
In addition to the softshells, there are also REC versions of fleece in various weights, of Foxdura 500, and of the workwear classic, Viking.

RecyclabilityThe recyclability of fabrics is an important aspect of eco-friendliness. The easiest fabrics to recycle are made completely from a single fibre material. Such options in Foxa’s range include Cosmos and the Pique Rec PES knit, which are both made from 100% recycled polyester. Development is under way on polyester-based rainwear clothing with a waterproof film also made from recycled polyester.
Below is a list of examples of Foxa’s Eco products. Development of Foxa’s eco-range continues. New products are developed continuously on a customer-oriented basis to ensure that like Foxa’s other fabrics, the new products are sustainable, thoroughly tested and functional as workwear.

Sustainability is eco-friendlySince the very beginning, Foxa’s key aim has been to develop sustainable fabrics. The durability of our textiles is extremely important to our customers, as our products are most often used in workwear. Workwear is an investment that should have a long life span. Research shows that sustainable and durable textiles are best for the environment. It is self-evident that a coat that lasts for two years when used daily is better for the environment than a cheaper option that ends up being recycled after just a few months. The sustainability of a fabric is still an important feature in Foxa’s product development. This naturally also applies to various recycled and other eco-friendly materials.

About responsibilityFoxa Oy strives to operate in a way that places the least possible burden on the environment. We believe that sustainable business should be based on a healthy economy, consideration for environmental issues, and social responsibility. We require that our partners in collaboration comply with the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact concerning human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. We regularly visit our manufacturing partners’ factories to carry out audits. If necessary, we use independent experts to carry out inspections. If shortcomings around responsibility are found and no corrective action is taken, we will cease collaboration with the factory in question. Almost all Foxa fabrics are ÖKO-TEX-certified, and we regularly ensure that there are no harmful chemicals in the fabrics.

Rester textiles recycling plant begins operations in Southwest FinlandA new Finnish plant specializing in recycling textiles will enter its production phase in autumn 2021. The factory is owned by Rester Oy and located in Paimio, just a thirty-minute drive from Turku. Rester mechanically defibres customers’ used textiles for a range of applications. The aim for the near future is to process some of the fibres into threads to make new clothing. The suitability of some of Foxa’s fabrics for Rester’s defibreing process were tested with good results. Fabrics made from a single fibre (PES, CO, PA, etc.) are best suited for the recycling process.
